A Simple Task Becomes A Disaster

This post is certainly off topic but I wanted to give those who logged in last Friday and Saturday and were unable to do so, an explination.

I planned to change my Service Provider a few weeks ago. I made all the arrangements with the new server. I own the rights to my Domain Name so it was to be a simple process to change over.

I did make one small mistake, which turned out to be a big mistake. I emailed my old Service Provider to let them know my intentions of changing providers. I backed my Database and downloaded the files from my provider to my desktop.

I knew how to change to my new server from my old server. I went into my account on the old server website and entered the new name server. This was enough to switch over to the new server.
I went into the new server and found that my domain was active. I went into Whois, entered my Domain Name and found that the transfer had taken place.

I uploaded my folders to the new Server. Everything is fine. When I went to upload my database, I received an error message. Tried a second time but received the same message. What do I do?

I thought that maybe I could get into my site through the old server. What I found was ‘account cancelled’ even though I was paid up until the 6th of March. Great. Obviously, the email alerted the old sever about my intentions since the change of server identification was an automatic process. Whoever read my Email immediately cancelled my account, shutting me out.

Now what? I have been in the habit of backing up my database on a regular bases. I went back to a backup made four days prior and proceeded to upload that to my new site. Eureka, it worked.

IF I did not have that previous backup, I would have been behind the eight ball, knee deep in the proverbial and probably the alligators would have been nibbling at my a…

When I looked through the posts, I found that I had only three posts that I needed to redone. Again lucky all the posts are kept on my computer.

What I am getting at here is to show you how important it is to backup everything. If you have a site, blog or computer crash and you have no backups, you are finished. You will have to go back to the drawing board and start again from square one.

Instead of backing up just once, I now backup TWICE. Two separate backups don’t overwrite the first one. Remember you are dealing with telephone lines, cable or whatever. Sometimes things happen that can cause that backup to be useless.

It is easy to backup TWICE, just takes a little longer but someday it may have been worth the effort.

BACKUP, BACKUP AND BACKUP AGAIN
