You will know, if you have been following my posts, that I ran into a problem with my skin under the Urostomy Pouch in early December.
You can review those posts below.
Part 1 Part 2 The skin healed very well after it had been peeled off. I gave it a rest to allow healing for about 6 weeks. I am now wearing my Urostomy pouch again but I had to make a modification. As I stated earlier, the surgeon, for some reason, constructed a short stoma. Yes, I do carry a little extra weight around my belly. Until my parastomal hernia became quite large, I did not have too many problems. Now, my short stoma has recessed down into the hernia. This is making the skin surrounding the stoma irritated because it is constantly being exposed to urine and leakage around the pouch is very common. My stoma is just too short and wearing a convex pouch produces nothing but pressure sores.I needed to some how increase the length of my stoma so that the urine was directed into the Urostomy pouch and not down between the pouch and my skin. I have been working on this problem for the past couple of years.I now have devised a apparatus that fits snugly around my stoma and directs the urine directly into the pouch. So far, it is working very well. I get 4 to 5 days between changes. I will experiment trying to increase the length of time I can wear the pouch. So far no leakage but I have not been pushing things. I also develop
purple urine bag syndrome and
PUBS under my pouch which is something else that I have to be concerned with.
IF YOU ARE LIKE ME and suffer from a short stoma, for what ever reason, then I am willing to share with you how I made my “stoma extension” that has, so far, greatly increased my pouch wear and is helping to protect the skin under the pouch.
