The Role Of Food In The Prevention Of Cancer
There is very little research being done on the role of fruit and bladder cancer. But if the consumption of fruit is beneficial for breast, lung, pancreatic and other cancers, it is safe to assume that the consumption of fruit is beneficial for bladder cancer.
An apple a day keeps cancer away. An eight-year study in France has produced the clearest evidence yet that regular consumption of fruit and vegetables cuts the risk of cancer.

Eating fruit and vegetables reduces risk of breast cancer and the more consumed, the greater the protection. Eating just one serving of vegetables a day reduces the risk of breast cancer by 21% and just one serving of fruit of day reduces the risk by 17%.
Fruits and Vegetables in breast cancer
Considerable evidence from preclinical studies indicates that plant-derived foods contain anticarcinogens. A comprehensive review of the literature found that a diet high in vegetables and fruit probably decreases breast cancer risk and that a diet high in total fat possibly increases risk. However, evidence of an association between a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in total fat and prevention of cancer progression has been mixed in epidemiological studies, the authors write.
As the consumption of fruit and vegetables increased, risk of breast cancer decreased (see Figures 1 and 2). Similarly, as vitamin C and beta-carotene intake increased, risk decreased.
Supermarket promotions are taking place - Tesco, Britain’s leading supermarket, is linking with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund to promote fruit and veg. This will be promoted in all Tesco’s stores during July 2001. Tesco say they feel this is their civic responsibility.
A spokesman from the department of health said the government’s advice comes from recommendations by the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy and Nutrition, which concluded in 1998 that a review of evidence showed that higher vegetable consumption would reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and gastric cancer. There was also weakly consistent evidence that higher fruit and vegetable consumption would reduce the risk of breast cancer.
According to the researchers, the breeding, cultivation, storage and processing of fruits and vegetables have always been aimed at maximizing production, minimizing loss from spoilage, and maintaining an attractive appearance of the fruits and vegetables for the consumer. Fruits and vegetables, however, contain important components for human health such as vitamins and minerals. In the last years, it has also become clear that more plant substances, so called phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, carotenoids, and glucosinolates play an important protective role against all kinds of diseases related to ageing, such as cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
